Hornell YMCA Aquatic ProgramsWe offer 7 week water exercise classes for adults - a little less stress on the body than land aerobics but just as challenging. All water exercise or aerobics are low impact. Set to individual's physical condition and needs. We encourage the individual to move at their comfort level. For those just wanting to swim, we offer specific times for Adults. We also offer Family/Open. Anyone can swim at these times. Children in grades 5 and up may swim without a parent, all others must be accompanied by an adult. There is also a time for all children to swim for free on Fridays regardless of whether they are members or non-members. Grades 1st - 3rd swim from 4:30 - 5:15 pm and grades 5th - 6th swim from 5:15 - 6:00 pm. For those who want to start getting back into shape. Also helps get stiff joints moving. Aqua Aerobics - For morning stretching and toning, semi in-shape plus losing weight. Hydrowalking - All the benefits and more of morning walking without the aches caused by pavement or bad weather. Recuperative. Good for the joints. Lunch Crunch - Exercise for those on the go. A shorter sampling of what the Y has to offer in the water and fitness center during lunch time. Choose aqua on Tuesdays and Thursdays, fitness center on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays or both aqua and fitness center. Fast & Furious - Serious evening cardio work out, for those who are in shape and want to stay that way. Aquacise - Evening stretching and toning. Low impact on joints. Click here to see Adult Rates and Times Preschool Swim ClassesThe 7 week Preschool Swim Program is designed for children ages 6 months - 5 who have not yet started kindergarten. SKIP - A water enrichment class designed for parents and children, 6 months to 3 years, to spend time together, and to help develop a positive aquatic experience. Swimmies diapers are required. PIKES (Beginner I) - Basic pool rules and aquatic safety, front, side and back paddle strokes, independence in the water, stationary floating techniques and danger recognition, asking for assistance, when to yell for help, dialing emergency phone numbers and reaching assists. Children must be potty trained and at least 3 years old. EELS (Beginner II) - Increased endurance in the front, side and back paddle strokes, stationary sculling and longer floating techniques. RAYS (Advanced Beginner I) - Additional pool rules as skills develop, decreased dependence on individual floatation devices, bobbing, front and back float, front, side and back alternating paddle strokes and reaching/throwing assists. STARFISH (Advanced Beginner II) - Review of Rays class, bobbing and floating without flotation devices, swimming underwater, front side and back paddle strokes without floatation devices, and preparing the child for the YMCA Progressive Swim Program. Click here to see Preschool rates and times. Progressive Swim ClassesNew swim lessons beginning April 7th, 9th and 12th. The 7 week Progressive Swim Program is designed for children in grades K-12. POLLIWOG (Beginner I) - Kids learn basic water safety, stroke development and personal growth fundamentals. GUPPY (Beginner II) - Kids learn front/back floating, front crawl stroke, and caution/patience in the water. MINNOW (Intermediate I) - Survival floating, treading water, back crawl stroke, self-discipline, goal setting and fitness concepts. FISH (Intermediate II) - Learn longer survival floating, breast stroke kick, dolphin kick, elementary backstroke, and teamwork. Home SchoolThis 7 week program allows children that are home-schooled to meet New York State Physical Education requirements. This 30 minute swim lesson runs during the regular school year. Class A is 2:00 -2:30 pm and Class B is 2:30 - 3:00 pm. The cost for YMCA Members is $11.00 and is $23.00 for Non-members. Adult SwimAdults and High School students (9th grade and up) are encouraged to enjoy the pool while no classes are scheduled. Free to members.
