Youth Programs

The HORNELL AREA FAMILY YMCA is your place for youth programming!  Beginning with our parent-child swim lessons, preschool swim lessons, toddler music class, Childwatch, and Y Preschool, your little one can enjoy a variety of educational and fun programs.  School-age children can take part in our “Littles” series of classes, from Little Kickers (soccer), Little Dribblers (basketball), Little Spikers (volleyball), Little Hitters (baseball and softball) to our newest programs, Little Flippers (swimming) and Little Artists!  We offer a licensed day care program for school-age children in Hornell, Canisteo-Greenwood, and Wayland-Cohocton.  Our fall soccer league and winter basketball leagues, youth fitness classes, school-age swim lessons, youth art classes, and music lessons and classes provide opportunities for youth and teens to learn new skills, practice sportsmanship, and have fun in our great facility.  Special youth events at the Y include Healthy Kids Day and our annual Halloween Party, as well as monthly Kids’ Night Out events (September-May).

Child Care Programs

Before & After-School Childcare

The HORNELL AREA FAMILY YMCA operates a before and after-school childcare program in the Wayland Elementary school, an after-school program in the Canisteo Elementary school, an after-school program in the Alfred-Almond Central school and an after-school program at the HORNELL AREA FAMILY YMCA.

The YMCA after-school program is a NYS licensed program developed by the YMCA to foster a child’s personal, physical, and emotional growth. Our program encourages children to build friendships with other children from different backgrounds, fosters self confidence and independence, and allows each child to learn the importance of caring and sharing with others. Children enjoy arts & crafts, gym activities, games, stories, and homework help. Children at our Hornell program receive regular art & music time. Breakfast is offered in the Wayland morning program. A nutritious snack is served daily in all programs.

Care for Kids

The HORNELL AREA FAMILY YMCA operates a day program for school vacation days.  This program includes gym, swim, arts and crafts, and time in our childcare room.  A nutritious snack is provided every afternoon.  Children must be enrolled in kindergarten through age 12.  Please provide lunch, a beverage, clean sneakers for the gym, and a swimsuit and towel.

Come grow and learn for us!  Your child will have many opportunities to shine socially and educationally in Y Preschool.  Our program prepares children for kindergarten, with a curriculum that includes learning the alphabet, numbers, shapes, colors, spatial relations, fine and gross motor skills, sight words, science, gym time, music, art, and swim lessons.  Preschool is offered for children between the ages of 3 and 5 who are fully potty trained and able to dress with minimal help.
